Abstract

This paper proposes that the degree of similarity in terms of vowel identity contributes to the irregularity in Tagalog mid vowel alternation. Findings suggest that both faithfulness constraint (Ident-BR [V]) and markedness constraints (Uniform-V [high] & Uniform-V [round]) based on the Kaun’s (1995) Uniformity Hypothesis dictates this similarity based on various degree. Based on these constraints, an initial grammar was created using simulation phases adapted from Boersma and Hayes (2001), as well as distribution information from native speakers
