Abstract

Silvestre de Sacy was a great orientalist, an expert on most Semitic languages, and a teacher of Arabic and Persian. He cofounded the Société asiatique with Abel Rémusat. He contributed greatly to the development of Eastern language studies in Europe and also to the knowledge of Eastern grammar books and literature.
