Abstract

The performance and reliability of digital microwave line-of-sight links is degraded mainly by multipath fading at frequencies below 10GHz and by rain above 10GHz. The aspect of rain induced attenuation with respect to raindrop temperature is dealt at length and multipath effect is briefly described. The status of microwave frequency bands for communication in India is presented. How the microstructure details of rain are necessary for estimating the rain induced attenuation in microwave region using Mie theory are explained. The results thus obtained using this theory for various drop size distributions are discussed and their importance is emphasized with respect to temperature and frequency. Also the results are compared with those obtained by the empirical formula reported earlier. The important parameters that are to be considered for establishing a digital link are described. The parameters for evaluation of digital transmission are given. Also, a typical digital link example is given to highlight t...
