Abstract

ABSTRACT AN inexpensive shunt meter to monitor irriga-tion flows is described. The meter is constructed using a segmental orifice, any household water meter, and standard piping. The discharge rating curves for several segmental orifices with different dam heights that can be used in 20.32 cm and 26.04 cm (8 in. and 10 in.) pipes are presented. Using these curves and a simple manometer, the shunt meter can be field adjusted to give the desired coefficient relating the total volume of flow to the volume indicated by the shunt meter.
