Abstract
In medium-energy electron diffraction (MEED) strong multiple scattering takes place in the forward direction. The short-wavelength approximation to forward multiple scattering in MEED is studied using the chain scattering formula of intensity calculation for the purpose of investigating the feasibility of describing scattering within a layer of atoms by a pseudodynamic theory and thus reducing calculation times. In a test calculation on a Si(111) surface, it is found that such an approximation is allowed in a part of the angular range and a pseudodynamic theory, based on the short-wavelength approximation to multiple scattering, can be used to this range.
