Abstract
This paper describes a wavelength-tunable actively mode-locked erbium fiber ring laser that generates 24-ps nearly transform-limited sech/sup 2/ optical pulses at 1557 nm at a repetition rate of 3 GHz. The distributed feedback semiconductor laser was used both as mode-locker and as tunable optical filter. The optical pulse train was generated using harmonic mode locking. Soliton transmission over 20 km standard optical fiber was demonstrated using this laser.
