Abstract

For more than two decades, Shireen Abu Akleh was the voice of Palestine on Al Jazeera in Palestine, the Arab world, and beyond. On May 11, 2022, she was brutally murdered by an Israeli sniper while covering events in the Jenin refugee camp, devastating her listeners all over the world to this day. Despite the insurmountable loss, her legacy continues to impact and inspire a new generation of Palestinian journalists and media workers, especially girls and young women. In April 2024, JPS editor R. Abdelnabi met with Abu Akleh’s niece, Lina Abu Akleh, via video conference to discuss her aunt’s legacy and the Abu Akleh family’s advocacy in getting justice for Shireen’s murder.
