Abstract
A multi-step method to calibrate a strapdown tri-axial magnetometer is presented. This approach incorporates a novel application of the thin plate spline approximation to account for magnetic crustal anomalies, potentially facilitating a more accurate vector calibration. The calibration methodology is applied to data collected aboard a U.S. Navy 108-ft wooden hull Yard Patrol training craft in the vicinity of Annapolis, MD. Track cross-over points, locations where the sensor is intentionally maneuvered across the same geographic location in more than one orientation, are used to demonstrate the quality of the magnetometer calibration.
