Abstract
Abstract Recently shell models and exchange charge models of interatomic forces in ionic and covalent crystals have been used to understand features of these crystals which are not explained by the simpler Born model. This review discusses these models and their theoretical foundations along with applications to the theory of dielectric, elastic and lattice vibration phenomena. Various forms of the models which have been proposed are compared.
