Abstract

Effective shear strength parameters may be obtained from cone penetration tests with pore-pressure measurements. The theoretical solutions presented below cover the interpretation of measurements in (1) sandy soils with drained conditions around the penetrating tip and (2) clayey soils with excess pore-pressure around the tip. A chart for approximate classification through point resistance and pore-pressure ratio is included. The method of interpretation is cone penetration tests in marine sediments and the results obtained are compared to laboratory test results on soil specimens from neighboring borings.
