Abstract

The pure shear flow of gas molecules interacting with an arbitrary central force is treated with the half-range orthogonal functions method. It is shown that the previous treatment byGross andZiering is not correct, since formulas valid only for maxwellian molecules are extended to other molecular models. The results of these authors were already criticized by Bakanov and Deryagin, because they do not satisfy the obvious requirement that, away from a physical wall, the half-range character of the solution is destroyed. But Bakanov and Deryagin did not single out the true reasons for the failure of Gross and Ziering’s results and thought it was due to a numerical error. The present method satisfyes exactly the asymptotic behavior claimed by Bakanov and Deryagin on physical grounds. An application to the slip flow problem is made.
