Abstract

The paper analyses experimental data on resistance to flow in smooth channels of circular cross-section. The results of the tests showed that the measured friction factors are larger than those for a pipe of equivalent diameter (D − 4R). Through the analysis of the data for the range of flow depths 0 < y < 0.85D, the geometric parameter y/P has been found more appropriately representing the shape effects on resistance to flow in circular channels than using a single parameter like the hydraulic mean radius, R.
