Abstract

This paper deals with the binary tomography reconstruction problem for very limited projection data availability. The connection between discrete geometrical moments and orthogonal projection data is thoroughly analyzed. The circularity shape descriptor, which can be expressed by geometrical moments, is taken as a new regularization factor in the reconstruction process. A new gradient based reconstruction method is designed to incorporate this regularization. Experimental evaluation shows that the proposed method is very competitive in comparison with other recently suggested methods for limited projection availability: one or two projection directions only. The proposed approach can be a valuable tool in situations of sharply reduced projection availability.
