Abstract

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a costly, yet preventable public health problem in the United States. A complete sexual history and risk assessment should be included in each clinical encounter, when appropriate. This research aimed to increase the providers’ confidence level with sexual history taking and assessing for high-risk sexual behaviors using an STI risk assessment tool. Risk assessment tool training increased nurse practitioners’ confidence in screening patients at risk for STIs. Nurse practitioners in retail health clinics have the opportunity to address this preventable public health crisis by focusing on STI risk factors.
