Abstract
To assess the extent of sexual assault researchers analyzed medico-legal cases reported to the police stations around Central Delhi during 1994-98. A total of 771 women who reported physical assault to the police were taken to the hospital for examination. Of these 65 alleged sexual assault including genital manipulation (25/65) attempted vaginal intercourse (18/25) vaginal intercourse (21/65) and anal intercourse (1/65). In addition 50 of those sexually assaulted were adolescents and this was the group most vulnerable to injuries. 27 cases reported that the perpetrator of the act was known to the victim while the rate of assault by a stranger increased significantly with age. Of the reported cases only 12 proceeded to court for trial.
