Abstract
Chapter 8 focuses on the sexual and reproductive rights of women, including an overview of contemporary developments, challenges, and advances. It reviews in particular important foundational documents to what we understand are women's rights related to sexuality, reproduction, and the right to the highest attainable standard of health, including the Cairo Programme of Action. This Chapter delves into key areas related to the sexual and reproductive rights of women, including accessibility, affordability, and quality; the regulation of abortion; maternal health, mortality, and morbidity; and the content of the right to life and assisted reproductive technologies. Some of the issues explored in this chapter are important barriers women face to adequately access needed reproductive health services, including gender stereotypes, racial discrimination, and economic disadvantage, and the relevance of the principles of reproductive autonomy, personal liberty, dignity, non-discrimination, and non-violence to sexual and reproductive rights.
