Abstract

ABSTRACTStudies were carried out to determine whether the anabolic steroids 17α‐methyltestosterone, 11‐ketotestosterone, 4‐chloro‐testosterone acetate, testosterone, oxymetholone and progesterone can promote an increase in body weight when incorporated, singly, in the diet of juvenile coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch). The steroids were administered for total periods of 32 or 34 weeks at concentrations of 1 and 10 mg/kg of diet. Significant increases in both body weight and length, at both concentrations, were recorded for 17α‐methyltestosterone, 11‐ketotestosterone, testosterone and oxymetholone. Progesterone and 4‐chlorotestosterone acetate failed to induce any change.Effects of the steroids on external characteristics, muscle composition and on the histological structure of the gonads will be presented.Preliminary results from a pilot study carried out in a hatchery environment will be used to illustrate the potential for sex steroids as growth promoters in salmon cultivation.
