Abstract
The present study investigated the contribution of gender role attitudes to how attitudes toward adoption vary between men and women. Students attending a USA university (N = 148) completed four scales that assessed attitudes regarding the traditional male role, machismo, attitudes toward women, and adoption, respectively. Women endorsed less traditional gender role attitudes and held more favorable attitudes toward adoption. These sex differences in adoption attitudes were mediated by attitudes toward women and by endorsement of machismo. Attitudes toward men's roles moderated sex differences in adoption attitudes; men, but not women, with less traditional attitudes held more positive attitudes toward adoption. Results suggest that attitudes toward gender roles, may explain the sex difference in attitudes toward adoption.
