Abstract
A previously well 21-year-old man presented with pyrexia and swelling of the right knee, with subcutaneous abscess formation following an abrasion sustained 5 days earlier. Abscess drainage and knee joint aspiration were done. Streptococcus pyogenes was isolated from the abscess pus, but the joint yielded no organisms. Intravenous benzylpenicillin 2·4 g six-hourly and clindamycin 600 mg eight-hourly were administered for an extra-articular soft tissue infection.
