Abstract

Three children with extrahepatic portal hypertention complicated by bleeding from esophageal varices were treated since 1991 . Because of recurrence of severe bleeding after splenectomy or spleno-arterio-embolisation, the patients underwent sclerotherapy with 5% sodium morrhuate under endoscopy. They were followed up for 6 months to 3 years without recurrence of bleeding. The problems of anesthesia for sclerotherapy, indications and complications of sclerotherapy were discussed in the text.
