Abstract

This statement underscores the important role of the mass media in society since the advent of newspapers more than five centuries ago. Renowned 18th century US President Thomas Jefferson placed the importance of media in society above that of government. In Africa, however, these roles have to be complementary, considering the fact that the continent is still very much a developing society. In developing societies you need a stable government watched over by a robust and free media.
