Abstract

Abstract This chapter presents an overview of community-based social services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) older adults. It focuses specifically on service delivery issues with respect to LGBT older adults. Beginning with a discussion of the specific service concerns of the LGBT older adult population, drawing from current research, the chapter describes the availability of services for LGBT older adults across the country, including information to assist providers in locating existing services in their own communities. It highlights key practice principles for working with LGBT older adults and for promoting LGBT-sensitive services within mainstream organizations. Finally, it identifies selected policy issues that directly affect the health and well-being of LGBT older adults and their families.
