Abstract

This chapter provides information designed to support clinicians in efforts to improve the health of LGBT older adults. The chapter reviews some of the current research regarding demographics and health disparities in the LGBT older adult population. It addresses common clinical conditions found in LGBT older adults and provides practical suggestions in designing an effective approach to establishing an open and trusting relationship with LGBT older adult patients. A distinction is made regarding approaches to care for the less frail and frail LGBT older adult. For frail individuals there is an emphasis placed on working with informal and formal caregiving systems in order to support effective collaboration as well as culturally competent care. The chapter ends with information and resources that support the clinician in efforts to advocate for improvements in services and policies related to the health of LGBT older adults.
