Abstract

This analysis of the growing presence of service uses in Nottingham's central shopping area begins with a brief review of the continuing debate on this issue. Analyses of a decade of change across zones used for planning purposes show several cases of continuing relocation within the central area even after apparent saturation has been reached. Generally an absence of adequate models of services change is highlighted, and there is particularly a danger of viewing services from a retailing-dominated perspective. Planning controls appear especially lacking of a fully developed appreciation of the service sector relative to prime trading locations.
