Abstract

Carruthers W. I. (1967) Major Shopping Centres in England and Wales, 1961, Reg. Studies 1, 65–81. The 1961 Census of Distribution makes possible a completely new assessment of the distribution of shopping centres and their status, based for the most part on data about the central shopping areas themselves. This can be based on the comparison of a number of indices, including amount and type of trade, estimated net attraction from beyond the administrative area, and provision of selected shopping facilities. Below Central London, a number of the most important provincial cities represent second-order centres. The remainder constitute a third order.
