Abstract

In their exploratory interview-study of personnel connected with one junior high school, the authors found that the service and maintenance orientations of teachers and administrators are characteristic of the organization rather than of the particular people in it. They suggest that the internalization of professional goals among school people may inhibit the substitution of means for ends in circumstances where goal conflict is present. Mr. Gross is professor of sociology and industrial relations; Mr. Popper is associate professor of educational administration; both men are at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
