Abstract
The use of Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS) in the culture of cells for the production of human therapeutics is undesirable. The risk of introducing mycoplasma, viruses, entities responsible for spongiform encephalopathy and other adventitious agents from FBS can be eliminated in culture by the use of serum free media. Ideally, and for the same reasons, cryopreservation of such cells should also be in serum free (SF) conditions. The use of Bio Products Laboratory therapeutic grade Human Serum Albumin (HSA), a proven safe product, as a replacement for FBS was investigated. Three Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) transformed human lymphoblastoid (Cell Lines A, B and C), one human/mouse heterohybridoma (Cell Line D) and one mouse hybridoma (Cell Line E) lines growing serum free were cryopreserved with and without the presence of FBS.
