Abstract

This chapter discusses serum creatine phosphokinase (SCPK) and serum aldolase (SAld) levels in acutely psychotic patients. It has been observed that the increased SCPK levels in the acutely psychotic patients are rarely present for more than 5–10 days and are sometimes present for only 1–2 days. In general, no elevations of aspartate aminotransferase (GOT), alanine aminotransferase (GPT), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), alkaline phosphatase, and acid phosphatase activities accompanied the elevations of SCPK or SAld levels. Large increases in SCPK activity were only found in acutely psychotic patients. The absence of increased SCPK or SAld levels in severely anxious or depressed psychoneurotic patients indicated that severe stress was not the cause of the increased serum enzyme levels.
