Abstract
Cancelling serials is traumatic for everyone concerned but rising prices have left academic libraries with little choice. A number of them are planning to cancel subscriptions in 1992 as a result of very high prices in 1991. Reasons for this situation are reviewed and results of a survey of serials cancellation is at Big Eight and Big Ten Universities are summarized. Major cancellations at the University of Oklahoma in 1977 and 1984 are discussed and results of the work of a 1991 serials review committee are revealed. Changes in the way libraries conduct their business need to be made. Access without ownership and electronic publishing may be the answer.
