Abstract
P rizren is a town of oriental type in South Serbia, formerly called Old Serbia. The city is situated in the Autonomous Region of Kosmet (abbreviation deriving from the names Kosovo and Metohija) near the Albanian border. In the Middle Ages, it was the summer residence of the Serbian Emperor Dugan. The region is now of great scientific and artistic interest. In Prizren and the neighbouring villages, the old Serbian cultural monuments, medieval churches and monasteries--with their renowned frescoesthe creative work of a determined and highly cultivated Serbian society (Kasanin 1958:6) dating from before the Turkish invasion-show no oriental influence. Meanwhile, the urban Serbian oral tradition, which may be seen and heard during the people's gathering round the places of religious worship already mentioned, shows that it did not remain untouched during the Turkish rule of five hundred years. The folk customs, the names of musical instruments and of some dances reflect oriental traces.
