Abstract

The objective of the article is to address sepsis in patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), investigating the main causes of mortality and the role of the clinical pharmacist. The Materials and Methods, the study was a descriptive bibliographic research, with a qualitative approach. The data were obtained from a database available on the website: SCIELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), BDENF-Bireme, LILACS, published in the last 10 years. Subsequently, the materials were analyzed and the necessary inputs were removed to carry out the research. In the Results and Discussion, sepsis can affect any age group, and it is the cause of concern for the competent bodies in the health area, as it affects many lives, leading to death in the vast majority of cases. An Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a reception center for patients in serious condition, who require intense monitoring and complex care. The causes of mortality in the ICUs are the delay in the recognition of the infectious reaction by the multidisciplinary team, delay in the administration of the drug and the predominance of septic shock, among the causes that lead the patient to death. In the final considerations, according to Resolution No. 675, of October 31, 2019, the role of the pharmacist in the care of critical patients in an intensive care unit, with regard to patient safety, quality management and efficiency , the demand for this professional increased as an integral part of the multiprofessional team. Therefore, intensive care pharmacist professionals must be able to identify the signs and symptoms of sepsis and organize with the multidisciplinary team, how to act to propose to the patient the care he needs. Pharmaceutical care and care must be updated and competent.
