Abstract

A separation process based on the combination of selective flocculation and column flotation was used to concentrate fine particles in the range 0.5 to 10 microns. Minerals studied include talc, coal, calcite, kaolinite and alumina. Polymers such as polyethylenoxide and polyacrylamides were used as flocculating agents. Results obtained with floc-flotation are compared with results obtained by selective flocculation followed by floc separation by sedimentation. Higher recoveries and grades where observed when the floc-flotation process was used. Polymer flocculation increased recovery obtained by column flotation but did not increase flotation recovery in a mechanical cell.
