Abstract

A large amount of work has been carried out on the TLC separation of different sulpha drugs on plain silica gel plates, but the effect of impregnation of silica gel plates for improving these separations has not been investigated. The present paper presents an improved separation and identification of ten closely related sulpha drugs on silica gel/calcium oxalate plates. TLC plates (0.5 mm thick) were coated by a slurry in water of a mixture of silica gel (40 g) and calcium oxalate (20 g, mesh size 200). The plates were activated at 60 ~ C for 24 h. Solutions of sulpha drugs (0.05 % w/v) in ethanol were used for spotting. The after development were sprayed with a solution of 50 mg of p-dimethylamino benzaldehyde (DAB) in 1 ml of conc. H2SO 4 diluted, to 100ml with 95 % ethanol. Yellow spots appeared on white background. After thorough research it was found that a mixture of ethyl acetate/chloroform/benzene (70: 40 : 30) gave the most satisfactory separation on silica gel-calcium oxalate (40:20) or Table 1
