Abstract

Rice bran is a feed ingredient as a result of the rice milling process which widely used as an energy source in the feed formulation in the chicken diet. Rice bran reported containing various nutrients such as oil, protein, carbohydrates (especially starch), beta-glucans, and pectins. Rice bran contains bioactive compounds that have positive effects on the chicken performance and health. Recently, bioactive compounds from rice bran have been developing as a source of making functional feed. The objective of this study was to review the bioactive compounds in rice bran and their benefits in order to produce functional feed for chicken. The results of the study showed that rice bran contains hundreds of bioactive components. The most important bioactive were tocopherols, tocotrienols, and oryzanols. This components have high antioxidant activity compared to other components. Lysolecithin from rice bran has ability on lowering cholesterol in blood, meat and chicken of eggs. Furthermore, rice bran extract reported has antibacterial properties. Besides, bioactive compounds of rice bran has function as immunomodulator. It can be concluded that the bioactive compounds of rice bran potentially used as raw materials for making functional feed for chickens.
