Abstract

A new technique for measuring strains that uses a highly viscous liquid to bond an ultrasensitive amorphous magnetostrictive ribbon to a bending member is presented. The measurement of the strain is effected by measuring the permeability at constant strain. Measured values of the strain gage figure of merit are > 2 × 10 5 (compared with ∼250 in semiconductor strain gages). The main features of this technique are its large dynamic range (nearly 10 4), low temperature dependence and good low-frequency response. Measurements were made from 0.01 Hz to 1 Hz. We anticipate a high-frequency limit above 1 kHz.
