Abstract

This paper describes the development of the first Senior Adult Oncology Program (SAOP) that was developed in Tampain 1994. The experience of the program established: 1. That a geriatric assessment is a key to taylor the management of older individuals, because it provides an estimate of life-expectancy and tolerance of treatment and unearth a number of conditions that may interefere with the management of cancer; 2. That a screening test to determine which patients may benefit from a full assessment is desirable. The current research projects of the SAOP include prediction of complications of chemotherapy, quantification of comorbidity and support of the caregiver.
