Abstract

The article outlines the contours of semiotic approach, based on theoretically elaborated and well-grounded principle of significance, for a more detailed and methodologically based study of the library collection in the context of cultural studies. Library collection as a collective memory of humanity is the complex sign system which is a part of larger system — metasystem (culture). The principle of significance makes it possible to research the communicative character of the collection more fully and to trace its dynamic transformations in the process of culture evolution.
