Abstract
Semiology is the field of study that provides the methodology of clinical examination, interprets symptoms and gathers elements necessary for the diagnosis and evolution of the case of a sick animal. In recent years, with the advancement of techniques and publications of studies in the field of ophthalmology, great achievements have been made in this veterinary specialty, thus allowing the early identification of eye diseases. Although veterinarians use specialized technology, an eye exam can be fully performed with the use of simple equipment. The objective of this work was to carry out a bibliographical survey about ophthalmic semiology in domestic animals, highlighting crucial points in the performance of the ophthalmic examination, such as instrumentation used, diagnostic techniques, main tests used and particularities of the visual system of domestic animals. The diagnostic approach in ophthalmology must be carried out methodically. The anamnesis, visual inspection and the main tests and exams adopted are essential for conducting the clinical case and for the success of the therapeutic approach. It is concluded, then, that it is of paramount importance to carry out works with the theme of veterinary ophthalmic semiology, assisting professionals in the clinical examination and, subsequently, in the diagnosis and proper treatment.
