Abstract
Some basic concepts of the statistical description of the nuclear Fermi liquid drop are discussed. The key quantity, the Wigner distribution function corresponding to the one-body density matrix in phase space, is analyzed. Its asymptotic expansion in powers of ħ, which leads to the Thomas-Fermi approach, is revisited. A survey of nuclear properties whose average value can be derived in Thomas-Fermi approximation is pointed out.
