Abstract

A crack compliance analysis approach was used to calculate stress intensity factors for surface cracks in flat plates with built-in ends. Stress intensity factor solutions are presented for both constant and linear stress distributions acting on the crack face. The results were verified using finite element analysis and good agreement was obtained. The solutions are suitable for the analysis of surface cracked plates with fixed displacement boundary conditions.
