Abstract

IT IS common knowledge that fertility in the broad breasted strains of turkeys is generally low. The high incidence of infertiles encountered in the incubation of eggs from broad breasted stock results in a tremendous annual loss to the turkey industry. Realizing the importance of this problem, the poultry department of the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station commenced investigations during the 1944–45 breeding and hatching season on factors affecting reproduction in Broad Breasted Bronze turkeys. One phase of these studies was concerned with semen production in toms, and the results of one season’s work in this field are presented in this paper.According to Burrows and Quinn (1939) the average quantity of semen obtainable at one collection from the turkey male is 0.3 to 0.4 cc. and the maximum about 1 cc. The sperm density of the semen was not reported.The Pennsylvania station (1941) reported that turkey males .
