Abstract

Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is a suitable method for the investigation of miniature cathode ray tube (CRT) powder screens. Coatings were prepared by the centrifugal settling and dusting deposition techniques. The morphology of different commercial green emitting phosphor powders and the structural properties of screens made of these samples have been examined by SEM. Size and shape of phosphor particles, as well as packing density, thickness and smoothness of luminescent layers were studied. These screen properties directly influence the resolution, light output and noise of CRT devices. For screens coated with (Zn,Cd)S:Ag phosphor with an average particle size of 2.5 μm, the optimum screen density is 0.5 mg/cm 2. The thickness of the densely packed layer is about 6 μm. CRTs with these screens have the required line diameter of 15 μm and the luminous efficiency of 16 Im/W at 5 kV excitation.
