Abstract

AbstractThe numerous responses of the English counties of Devon and Cornwall to the emergence of new patterns of tourism demand are described. The region is responding to changing consumer preferences by ceding increased control to local administrators over the strategic development of the local tourist industry; and redefining the image of the local tourist industry, to better reflect the things that these new types of tourists are interested. The Tate Gallery, in St Ives, is one example of a development to move the local product away from sun and sand tourists, towards visitors interested in culture and heritage attractions.
