Abstract

The population ratio of free and self-trapped excitons in KI has been investigated with the use of narrow-band tunable laser light in the 1s exciton absorption region. The ratio shows a significant excitation energy dependence. The result strongly suggests that a part of the excitons are directly self-trapped before full thermalization in the free exciton band when the excitation energy is higher than the top of the potential barrier which separates the free and self-trapped exciton states.
