Abstract

In the past it was assumed that natural forces would lead to disruption and the growth of chaos and that only intelligent activity could resist this. The assumption of the inexorable validity of the Second Law of thermodynamics led even to the idea of a “heat death” of the Universe. Only in the last decennia has it been realised that Nature has a strong tendency to move towards self-organisation and to the formation of structures which are ordered in space and time.
