Abstract
This chapter describes the method Film as Observable Communication, which explores how digital film may be used as one of the underpinning building blocks in communication and storytelling. A strength of today’s increasingly affordable, and thereby ubiquitous, digital technology is that people now have the means to support every learner in becoming their own filmmaker and storyteller. In 1995, during the course of her studies in visual anthropology, Mascha Legel was inspired by the idea of handing the camera to her participants in order to get their unique points of view – rather than restricting her research to only the anthropologist’s perspective. Since 2016, Mascha and Christopher Norrie have been collaborating – most recently leveraging the dynamic interactions of self-created film with aided communicators to build their skills in sharing personal narratives, and promote the use and impact of their augmentative and alternative communication technologies.
