Abstract

We study the self-similar compression of a gas sphere. The radial and time dependencies of density, temperature and velocity are obtained. A central hot region is produced. The model sets no upper limit to the compression factor. We determine the time dependence of the required driving power, which agrees with known computer results for optimized implosions.
