Abstract

Because of the dramatic decline in the number of geology majors which has occurred since 1983, many geology departments are making major modifications to their programs in order to attract and retain new majors. Greater emphasis is being placed on applied geology (engineering and hydrogeology) and earth-science education (elementary- and secondary-school teacher preparation). Departments are finding it difficult to recruit adequately prepared faculty to work in these areas. Many faculty in traditional geology departments find it difficult to receive promotions and tenure for work in earth-science education. For existing and newly developed earth-science education programs to succeed, major modifications of current tenure and promotion policies and procedures must be implemented at many institutions.
