Abstract
Background & aims: Several studies have demonstrated a beneficial correlation between selenium (Se) supplementation and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), but this relationship remains inexplicit. In HT patients, Se is administrated as sodium selenite or selenomethione and is considered adjuvant to levothyroxine (LT4) treatment. The objective of the present review was to update the current knowledge about the efficacy of Se supplementation practices among HT patients, in terms of changes in peroxidase (TPO-ab), overall well-being and ultrasonographic thyroid morphology.
