Abstract

Due to the limited wear resistance, AISI 1045 steel has limited applications in harsh environments, and the friction effect leads to premature scrapping. In order to improve the mechanical properties of AISI1045 steel, in this study, WC-Co particles reinforced AISI 1045 steel composites were produced by selective laser melting (SLM), and mainly focused on the influence of laser line energy density (LED) on the microstructure and mechanical properties in detail. The Vickers hardness test and rotational friction test were conducted to determine the Vickers hardness and friction resistance properties of composites. Results demonstrated that the SLM 500 J/m WC-Co/AISI 1045 steel composites possesses higher Vickers hardness and wear resistance compared to that of other samples owing to the finer grains and higher relative density. Herein, the wear mechanism and the binding interface of the SLM composites was also deeply discussed in this paper.
